Thanks to the Wall Street Journal, the Mural Tour at the Department of Interior got on our radar. You can sign up for the tour on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm, and the tour lasts one hour. Your guide will point out the staircase that has been featured in movies, an Ansel Adams commissioned photography series thanks to Secretary Harold Ickes (the longest serving Secretary of Interior and second longest serving Cabinet member), along with works by Maynard Dixon, Allan Houser, Gifford Beal, John Steuart Curry, and others.
If you arrive early, go through security and grab a coffee in the basement at Bison Bistro and browse the gift shop to pick our your state pin. After your tour, check out the museum on the first floor and the Indian Craft Shop across the hall.
